Rattlesnake

Rattlesnake is a very simple but effective phonics activity. It gives lots of repetitive yet enjoyable practice decoding an increasingly long string of graphemes (letters and/or digraphs such as sh and oa), alternating consonant and vowel graphemes.

Rattlesnake is easy to make and easy to play. And while it might seem like it would get boring, I have always found that the children I teach are happy to just keep going and going until they have used up all the game pieces I give them (over 40 at a time!).

Here is a YouTube video of how I make my game tiles (in this case, the hexagons, or letter cells):

And here is a PDF that you can print out to make the game tiles. It’s all you need to play!
